Amos Institute Interview on "The Sitch"

by Amylee Amos PhD, RDN, IFMCPNews

To celebrate Brain Awareness Week, I was interviewed by Registered Dietitian Whitney English on her popular You Tube channel, "The Sitch."

I was honored to share the great work we are doing on the Bredesen Protocol with her thousands of viewers.

We discussed the basics of the Bredesen Protocol, including much of the research behind the interventions we implement. I explained the types of testing that we use to create a client's ReCODE Report. We reviewed the exceptional results we see, subjectively and objectively, with clients on the Bredesen Protocol.

Because Whitney's blog is largely nutrition based, we reviewed the major components of the Bredesen Protocol nutrition plan: whole foods like non starchy vegetables in a wide variety of colors, healthy fats such as avocado, olives, nuts, seeds, and coconut oil, lean proteins such as cold water, low mercury fish, and low glycemic fruits like berries. We also discussed the importance of avoiding processed foods, non-nutritive sweeteners, simple carbohydrates and gluten, large amounts of meat and dairy.

I went over with Whitney some of the research behind the significance of the ApoE4 allele and why mild ketosis is beneficial for individuals with this genetic variant. We discussed genetic testing and the importance of understanding that genetic testing is not diagnostic. The direct to consumer genetic testing that Whitney and I talked about was 23andMe, which tells the consumer whether they have 0, 1, or 2 copies of ApoE4.

We summed up our discussion with talk of supplements for brain health and the danger of blanket supplementation, stressing that the Bredesen Protocol is a highly individualized protocol.

Whitney's blog and You Tube Channel is a great resource for evidence based nutrition and lifestyle information. I highly recommend subscribing to her channel for great nutrition tips, recipes, and more!
